My main kit is a 1983 Tama Superstar 4 piece in sizes 20, 12, 16. I also have a matching 22 inch bass drum that I use instead of the 20 when it suits the music and a 13 inch rack tom that sees some use when necessary. These old birch drums have a solid “punch” but plenty of warmth as well.
I have a variety of snare drums that I use depending on the musical situation. I have a 6.5 x 14 that matches the superstar kit (birch), but more often I find myself using my older (1969) Ludwig Supraphonic 5×14 or a mid 80s Ludwig acrolite. I also have a Tama SLP studio maple with wood hoops that sounds big, fat and warm for recording and a gretsch 5×14 catalina maple.
I am a bit of a cymbal connoisseur. I have quite a variety of cymbals and am able to tailor the set up for what the music calls for. I have a full set of Zildjan Ks with a 20 inch K ride, 14 inch K hats, and 16 and 18 medium thin dark crashes. I also have a huge set of 16 inch K light hats that are amazing. I also have some drier, darker and trashier cymbals: a set of 15 inch Istanbul Agop Om hats, a 21 inch Meinl Byzance transition ride, and an 18 inch Meinl extra dry thin crash. I also have a 22 inch and 19 inch Sabian HHX Omni set. As far as effect type cymbals I have a 20 inch A Zildjan riveted ride from the late 60s an 18 inch Paiste colorsound china and an old zildjan 8 inch splash. Normally I use a ride, hats and one or 2 crashes or possibly one crash and one of the effects type cymbals on gigs.
